Game Day 4/9: Falcons at Bruins

What made the difference? Goaltending. SPR-1 PRO-6 Gerald Coleman allowed 6 goals on 26 shots faced. After getting woefully outshot last night in front of Jonathan Boutin, the Falcons actually stayed even at 26 shots with the Bruins today. Conventional wisdom has said that Coleman holds an edge over Boutin going into the offseason due to the amount of experience he has racked up in the AHL and the two games of NHL experience he's gotten this season. However, Boutin's .899 rookie save percentage is 16 points higher than Coleman's and a 0.65 better GAA. Making the situation even more murky next year will be the probable signing of Karri Ramo into the organization. Marek Kvapil scored his 18th goal of his rookie season today. Hopefully he can dig deep and get his 20th by season's end. Doug O'Brien had a helper on the goal, his 32nd point of the year. Game sheet from TheAHL.com.

Game Night 4/8: Storm at Chiefs

It says a lot when you can go toe to toe with the division leader like this. TOL-3 JHN-2 (SO) Morgan Cey stopped 36 of 38 before falling in the shootout. The Chiefs were outshot 38-22 in the game. Adam Henrich had an assist in the game. Game Night 4/8: Penguins at Lightning

Old man Burke is staking his claim on the starting job. PIT-0 TB-1 Sean Burke stopped 25 of 25 for the shutout. Vincent Lecavalier scored the game's only goal. Ryan Craig played 15:24 with 1 shot, 1 hit and 1 block. Paul Ranger played 14:05 with 2 blocked shots. Evgeny Artyukhin played 6:02 with 1 shot and 1 hit. Game sheet from NHL.com.

Game Night 4/8: Bruins at Falcons

The Boutin Wall with two wins in his last two starts extends Springfield's winning streak to three games. PRO-1 SPR-3 Bear in mind, prior to this game, Springfield had dropped 9 of 10 to the Providence Bruins. In this game, they were outshot a mind boggling 50-17. Yes, 50-17. Jonathan Boutin made 49 saves though to help the Falcons steal a win, and was named first star of the game. Dan Cavanaugh led the way for Springfield offensively with 2 assists. This is a time when the Falcons are evaluating who they will try to keep for next season. Some players have not stepped up, but Cavanaugh has. He was named the game's second star. In my opinion, every attempt to retain him for next season should be made. Jared Nightingale scored his first professional goal in the game while Nick Tarnasky scored the game winner (third star) and Norm Milley added a valuable insurance marker. Darren Reid, Ryan Vesce and Todd Rohloff also had helpers in the game. When I had a low grade fit of Tourettes last week after watching the Falcons get wiped off the map by Hartford, I was highly critical of the lack of the goaltending stepping up. Credit to Boutin in particular over his last two starts. Game sheet from TheAHL.com.
