Jared Nightingale, the Michigan State University product who spent 10 tryout games with the Springfield Falcons last year, has signed a two-way AHL/ECHL contract with the Iowa Stars that should see him split the season with Iowa (AHL) and the Idaho Steelheads (ECHL). Nightingale had a goal and an assist in his 10 games with the Falcons last year, also earning 18 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound right-handed defenseman played in 156 games in four seasons at Michigan State, where he accumulated 161 penalty minutes and 23 points (21 assists, two goals). Also, Mike Oullette, who played for the Falcons after completing his career at Dartmouth College, was signed by the Hartford Wolfpack. Oullette, who had one assist in three games with Springfield, was part of the Lightning's prospect camp in July. The center had one assist in five scrimmage games.

According to Ontario's [i]Brockville Recorder and Times[/i], Doug Andress, fresh off signing a contract with the Johnstown Chiefs, has been invited by the Lightning to participate in their NHL training camp in two weeks. Andress has previously attended rookie camps for the Sharks and Blackhawks in 2004, but this will be his first shot at a full NHL camp. According to the article, Andress is realistic about his chances to make the Lightning or Falcons, but the offensive defenseman is at least hoping to play in an exhibition game.

Yesterday the Springfield Falcons announced the signing of defenseman John Adams to a one year contract. Falcons General Manager Bruce Landon stated that Adams gives the Falcons improved depth on the blueline. The signing was reported over the weekend by the Naples, Florida News.

Eurohockey.net is reporting that legendary 9th round pick Vitali Smolianinov has transferred from Irtysh Pavlodar of the Kazakhstani league to Barys Astana. Rumors are as of yet unconfirmed that Smolianinov is the brother of film star [url=http://www.boratmovie.com]Borat.[/url]

Lightning first round pick [url=riku-helenius]Riku Helenius[/url] was back between the pipes today after sitting for the final three games of the Tampere Cup behind Ilves starter Tuukka Rask. In today's match, Helenius lost to SaiPa 3-1 to move his preseason record to 3-2 thus far. Prior to the match, Ilves went 2-2 with Rask dropping the final match of that tournament to Swedish club Brynas.
