Game Night 11/23: Lightning at Capitals

Now THAT is some exciting NHL action. TB-4 WSH-3 (SO) The Lightning reacted to falling behind 3-0 in a very positive way and charged back to tie the game 3-3 partly on the strength of two Dan Boyle goals and had numerous opportunities to win it in regulation and overtime. But, perhaps, this way is better as the Lightning finally got the shootout monkey off their backs thanks to John Grahame and shootout markers by Brad Richards and Vaclav Prospal. Amongst the rookies, I thought Paul Ranger quietly had an outstanding game at his end of the rink. He continues to surprise me with how poised he is defensively. The young man is very active with the stick and is very cool, calm and adept at spinning away from forecheckers and making the smart play to move the puck out of danger. 19:20 of even ice time tonight. Evgeny Artyukhin with 11:07 of ice time, 3 hits and 2 minor penalties. Game sheet from NHL.com.

Game Night 11/22: Lightning at Flyers

The Lightning haven't lost a regular season game to the Philadelphia Flyers since the 2002-2003 season. TB-4 PHI-2 He wore the goat horns in the game against Washington, so I'll give Burke some love for the performance he turned in tonight stopping 30 of 32 shots for the victory. Also, the checking line came up big tonight accounting for three of the four goals scored. Big game by former Springfield Falcon Martin Cibak with a goal and an assist. Robbie DiMaio with two assists. Old man Taylor with 1G 1A. Outstanding work by a group of checkers that is just now finally starting to find its stride. Amongst the rookies, Artyukhin had an assist and a +1 rating in 13:35 of ice time. I thought he was very strong on the forecheck tonight and helped create a lot of space for his linemates. Paul Ranger logged perhaps the most ice time he has all season with 21:22 of even rating playing time. Only his pairing partner Dan Boyle logged more ice time tonight. Very impressive. Game Night 11/20: Lightning at Hurricanes

Ahhhh the cries of the Carolina announcers whining that fatigue was a legitimate excuse for their team's play. Music to my ears. TB-5 CAR-2 I cannot overemphasize how important an early season win this was. The 4 point in division swing made this a very very key victory, even if it is November. A loss would've dropped the Lightning to 10 points behind in the division, so the Lightning did themselves a huge favor by taking the win tonight. And, tonight was the first of what I suspect will be quite a few multi-point games for Paul Ranger's career. 2 assists and a +1 in just a shade under 15 minutes of ice time. It may not be this year, but at some point expect the offense to really start to flow given how strong his skating and instincts are. Evgeny Artyukhin with 9:18 and an even rating. Game Night 11/17: Islanders at Lightning

Welcome back Marty St. Louis... NYI-2 TB-3 Two straight solid games for John Grahame. He's starting to hit his stride as we move towards the mammoth show down in the Southeast with Carolina. Evgeny Artyukhin with an assist on the Lightning's second goal by Brad Richards. +1 in a sparing 6:54 of ice time. I was hoping Torts could get him out more against Campoli who is a smaller defenseman who looked clueless how to contain R2. Ranger with a quiet, efficient 17:37 of even hockey. Game Night 11/15: Lightning at Capitals

At least they got a point out of it... TB-3 WSH-4 (SO) There's no good way to blow a two goal third period lead and Sean Burke wears the goat horns in my books for Ovechkin's tying goal. The young man will be given a lot of plaudits for the play he made, but in my opinion there's absolutely no reason for Burke to allow a short side backhand goal from that angle. None. In past games there was a lack of timely goal scoring. I lay blame for the lack of that timely save tonight. Among the rookies, Paul Ranger's ice time slowly continues to creep upward. Tonight he once again broke the 18 minute mark and was even with 2 shots on goal and 2 shots blocked. I thought he was very good tonight. Evgeny Artyukhin finished with a minus as he was on the ice for Ovechkin's game tying goal. In 9:22 of ice time they only credited him with 2 hits. He seemed more active to me.
